Hi FOCA artist friends,

Ten years ago, I started an art program at the Gifford Youth Achievement Center. As of the end of this season, I am retiring because frankly I am getting a little old for this. The need then is for one or more of you to replace me.

GYAC located at 4879 43rd Ave, Vero Beach, is one of the more important and necessary operations I have ever been involved with.

Back in the 60s, when schools were segregated, the high school graduation in Gifford was around 95%. Following desegregation and lasting into the 90s the graduation rate fell to 23%. The discombobulation of busing, lack of community and diffusion of parent involvement took its toll. So, in 1998, under the leadership of its founders and the concerned parents, GYAC was formed as an after-school tutoring program for K-12 students. Since its founding graduation rates now reach 98%. An amazing feat and a huge boost to the Gifford community.

During most of the week classes at GYAC mimic what the students are studying in their regular school, except on Friday where there is no school the next day. On Friday students can select an elective, taught by a volunteer, such as gardening, music, sports, theater, etc. or even art. That's the program I have provided.

I get about 8-10 students for these Friday classes. Class is 3:30-5:30pm. It's pretty basic stuff: still life, charcoal drawing in the classroom and when the weather is nice acrylic painting out on the patio. I have acquired easels and small tables, and I supply all materials which is simple student grade.

You don’t have to be an experienced art teacher or even an experienced artist. All of you know the fundamentals and that's what we are teaching here. All you really need is the desire to help these kids find the enjoyment that you yourself find in the arts.

If you are interested in learning more about this rewarding opportunity, email me at hankfeeley@att.net or call me at 312 560 3916.

Thanks........Hank Feeley
